Walk the Historic District
A self-guided walk is the best introduction to downtown Charleston. Begin near Waterfront Park, continue toward Rainbow Row and follow East Bay Street to The Battery and White Point Garden. The route combines harbor views, public parks, pastel facades, church steeples, ironwork and residential architecture. Walk slowly enough to notice plaques and details, but remember that most houses are private homes rather than public attractions. Early morning provides cooler temperatures, softer photography light and less sidewalk congestion. Comfortable shoes are essential because brick, stone and uneven pavement appear throughout the district. A guided history or architecture tour can add context on a later day.
